The Nike Air Max 98 is possibly one of the most underrated models throughout the Air Max family, so it may have initially come as a surprise to most that it would be the silhouette selected for the Supreme x Nike Air Max collaboration. But in true Supreme style, they opted against reinventing a Nike Air Max titan like the Air Max 95, which is one of the most popular running sneakers ever. Coincidentally, the man who designed the Air Max 95, Sergio Lozano, also happens to be responsible for the Air Max 98, which never lived up to the fame of its predecessor.
Supreme opted to go with the sneaker defined by its almost-full-length air bubble and it offers up plenty of 90’s charm. The New York skate brand’s forthcoming Air Max 98 pack has received a mixed reception online, but what’s new? The initial red/white colourway was previewed through NikeLab’s Instagram account and recently more colourways have been unveiled, including all-black, beige/snakeskin and most recently, the navy/white editions.
The previews of the Air Max 98 silhouette showcases its almost-full-length visible Air Unit across the sole, Supreme branding is emblazoned on the toe and pull loop, whilst Nike hold on to their OG Air Max logo on the tongue. Integrated laces provide a holding fit and to complete the look, patent leather is used across all four editions, alongside the Supreme slogan “WORLD FAMOUS” detailing on the heels.
Blacked out in its entirety, the only touch of colours can be seen on the insole which is red, along with a red Nike tick bubble that features on the underside of the black outsole. The upper of the sneaker is completed by patent black leather and reflective piping.
Traditional ‘Supreme red’ Patent leather is paired with silver across the upper of this pair, reflective silver piping compliments the red and is set on a white midsole.
This edition boasts a helping of faux snakeskin and silver/grey across the upper, silver reflective piping and a white sole that really sets this sneaker off.
The final sneaker in the collaboration comes in the form of a white base and blue patent leather wrapping across the upper shoe and a reflective piping to finish.
Nike’s world Air Max Day may have already drawn to an end, but they are certainly continuing to make waves within the sneaker community with this new release being officially confirmed by NikeLab recently.
